「ろくな」や「ろくに」という言葉を聞いたことがありますか？ Have you ever heard the words “Roku-na” or “Roku-ni”?
例えば、
| 「ろくなことを言わない」は「まともなことを言わない」
“(He/She) doesn’t say anything decent” |
| 「この店にはろくなものがない」は「この店には大したものがない」

| 「あんな悪ガキはろくな大人にならない」は「あんな悪ガキは真っ当な大人にならない」
“Such a brat won’t be a decent adult” |
という意味で使います。
また、
| 「怪我をしてろくに歩けない」は「怪我をして歩くこともままならない」
“I can’t even walk because I’m injured” |
| 「あの新人はろくに挨拶もできない」は「あの新人は挨拶すらちゃんとできない」
“That newcomer can’t even say hello.” |
という意味になります。
とんでもない人のことを「ろくでなし」とも言います。 We also call a ridiculous person “Rokudenashi”.
ではこの「ろく」とは何なのでしょうか？ So what is this “Roku”?
「ろく」には「碌」という漢字がありますが、これは当て字で、本来は「陸」と書くそうです。 “Roku” has a kanji “碌”, but this is a phonetic equivalent, and it is originally written as “陸”.
「大陸」や「陸地」などの言葉に使われる「陸」という字には平らで真っ直ぐという意味があります。 “陸” is used in words such as “大陸 (continent)” and “陸地 (land)”. So it means like flat and straight.
つまり「ろくなことを言わない」は「真っ直ぐで正しいことを言わない」ということなのです。 In other words, “(He/She) doesn’t say anything decent” means “doesn’t say straight and right things.”
