As we mentioned in the previous article, “Temples and Shrines, Buddhism and Shintoism”,

In addition to “○○ Shrine”, there are other names for shrines such as “○○ Jingu” and “○○ Taisha”, etc.

This time we are going to talk about the names of shrines.

The names of shrines

神宮（Jingu）

“Jingu” is used for shrines related to the imperial family such as shrines that enshrine the ancestor of the imperial family, or shrines that enshrine the emperor. 

Actually, the official name of Ise Jingu is just “Jingu”.

大社 （Taisha・Oyashiro）

“Taisha” means the original shrine that divided the spirits enshrined in various shrines.

In the past, “Oyashiro” used to refer to “Izumo Taisha Shrine”.

宮（Miya・Gu）

“Miya” is used for shrines that enshrine high-ranking people, the imperial family, or historically important people.

東照宮（Toshogu）

“Toshogu” is used for shrines that enshrine Ieyasu Tokugawa, who opened the Edo Shogunate.

“Nikko Toshogu Shrine“, a World Heritage Site, is famous.

 天満宮・天神（Tenmangu・Tenjin）

“Tenmangu” and “Tenjin” are shrines that enshrine Sugawara no Michizane, a nobleman of the Heian period and a god of learning.

“Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine” in Fukuoka Prefecture is famous.

八幡宮・八幡神社（Hachimangu・Hachiman jinja）

Hachimangu Shrine and Hachiman Shrine are shrines that enshrine the great god of Hachiman. There are approximately 110,000 shrines nationwide, more than 40,000 of Hachimangu and Hachiman jinja.

“Usa Jingu” in Oita Prefecture is its head shrine.

神社（Jinja）

As you know, the most common one. It’s also the generic term of shrines in Japanese

社（Yashiro）

“Yashiro” means a small shrine. Many of them do not have a site.

以前いぜんの記事きじ、『お寺てらと神社じんじゃ、仏教ぶっきょうと神道しんとう』の中なかでも少すこし触ふれましたが、

神社じんじゃの名前なまえには「○○神社」というものの他ほかにも、

「○○神宮じんぐう」とか「○○大社たいしゃ」といったものがあります。

今回こんかいはそんな神社の名前のお話はなしです。

神社の名前

神宮（じんぐう）

皇室こうしつの祖先そせんとされる神かみを祀まつっている神社、天皇てんのうを祀っている神社など、皇室と関係かんけいがある神社が「神宮」を使つかっていることが多おおい。伊勢いせ神宮の正式せいしき名称めいしょうは「神宮」。

大社（たいしゃ）

各地かくちの神社に祀る神霊しんれいを分わけた、おおもとの神社。かつては大社（おおやしろ）といえば出雲いずも大社たいしゃのことを指さした。

宮（みや・ぐう）

身分みぶんの高たかい人ひとや皇族こうぞく、歴史れきし的てきに重要じゅうような人物じんぶつを祀っている神社。

東照宮（とうしょうぐう）

江戸えど幕府ばくふを開ひらいた徳川家康とくがわいえやすを祀っている神社。世界せかい遺産いさん「日光にっこうの社寺しゃじ」の日光東照宮が有名ゆうめい。

 天満宮・天神（てんまんぐう・てんじん）

平安へいあん時代じだいの貴族きぞくで、学問がくもんの神様かみさまとされる菅原すがわら道真みちざねを祀っている神社。福岡ふくおか県けんの太宰府だざいふ天満宮が有名。

八幡宮・八幡神社（はちまんぐう・はちまんじんじゃ）

八幡はちまん大神おおかみを祀っている神社。全国ぜんこくにある約やく11万まんの神社のうち4万社しゃ以上いじょうを占める。大分県おおいたけんの宇佐うさ神宮が総本社そうほんじゃ。

神社（じんじゃ）

最もっとも一般的いっぱんてきなもの。総称そうしょうとしても使われます。

社（やしろ）

小ちいさい神社。敷地しきちがないものも多おおい。
